The general partner is the apex of the venture capital career ladder — making final investment decisions, raising capital from LPs, setting firm strategy, and ultimately being accountable for fund returns.

What Does a VC Partner Do?

A venture capital partner — specifically a general partner (GP) — is both an investor and an entrepreneur. Partners are responsible for raising the fund itself, which means convincing institutional investors, family offices, and high-net-worth individuals to commit tens or hundreds of millions of dollars based on the GP's track record, thesis, and team.

Once a fund is raised, partners make the final call on every investment. While deal teams source and diligence opportunities, the partnership vote determines which companies receive term sheets. This decision-making authority is the defining characteristic of the partner role — and it carries significant personal financial exposure, since GPs typically invest 1-5% of the fund from their own capital.

The compensation structure for partners reflects this asymmetric risk-reward profile. Base salaries and management fee distributions provide a comfortable living, but the real wealth creation comes from carried interest — the GP's share (typically 20%) of the fund's profits above a hurdle rate. A single successful fund can generate tens of millions in carry, but this typically takes 7-10 years to materialize. Partners at top-performing firms with multiple funds under management can earn eight figures annually when carry distributions are included, but the variance is enormous. Many partners at underperforming funds earn less than their counterparts in private equity or investment banking.
