A venture capital associate sits at the critical juncture between sourcing and investment decision-making. Unlike analysts who primarily support the process, associates are expected to independently identify promising companies, develop investment theses, and shepherd deals from first meeting through term sheet to close.

Associates typically come from one of three backgrounds: promoted analysts who have proven their judgment, post-MBA hires bringing operating experience or domain expertise, and former founders or startup operators who understand company-building from the inside.
