About Anyscale

Anyscale sells a managed compute platform built on Ray, an open source framework for distributing Python and AI workloads (data processing, training, serving) across clusters. Ray was developed at UC Berkeley's RISELab in 2016 and 2017. Robert Nishihara, Philipp Moritz, Ion Stoica and Michael I. Jordan, the project's creators, founded Anyscale in 2019. Its first Form D lists a Berkeley address; the company is now headquartered at 600 Harrison Street in San Francisco. Nishihara was the first CEO, and Keerti Melkote was named CEO in July 2024. Ray users named in company releases include Amazon, Ant Group, LinkedIn, Shopify, Uber, Visa, Meta, IBM and Instacart.

Anyscale launched in December 2019 with a $20.6 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz, joined by NEA, Intel Capital, Ant Financial, Amplify Partners, 11.2 Capital and The House Fund. Its February 2020 Form D reports $20,744,995 sold. In October 2020 NEA led a $40 million Series B, with Andreessen Horowitz, Foundation Capital and Intel Capital participating, bringing total funding above $60 million. In December 2021 Andreessen Horowitz and Addition co-led a $100 million Series C at a $1 billion valuation, with NEA, Intel Capital and Foundation Capital participating, for $160 million raised in total. In August 2022 the company added $99 million to the Series C, co-led by Addition and Intel Capital with Foundation Capital. The amended September 2022 Form D reports $199.2 million sold in that offering.

Over 2023 and 2024 Anyscale launched Aviary and the Anyscale Endpoints LLM service and announced a collaboration with NVIDIA. Partnerships with Google Cloud (April 2025) and Microsoft Azure (November 2025, with a native Azure launch in June 2026) followed. In October 2025 Ray was moved to the PyTorch Foundation, where the community now governs it. On July 30, 2026 Nscale announced it would acquire Anyscale. Nscale is a London headquartered full stack AI cloud provider. The deal was expected to close in the second half of 2026, and no price was disclosed. Anyscale keeps its brand and customers, and its staff of about 200 across the U.S., Europe and India joins Nscale. Named customers at the time of the deal included Coinbase, Bedrock Robotics and Runway.

Anyscale follows a familiar venture pattern: an open source project from academia gets a commercial company built around it. Andreessen Horowitz led at the company's launch, NEA led the next round, and Addition and Intel Capital led the expansion at and after the $1 billion Series C. The exit came about seven years after founding, as a sale to an infrastructure buyer rather than an IPO. Because no price was published, it is not possible to say whether the 2021 and 2022 investors were paid above the $1 billion mark.
