About Remote

Remote (Remote Technology, Inc., remote.com) is a global employment platform that lets companies hire, pay and manage staff and contractors in other countries without setting up their own local entities. It offers employer of record services, global payroll, contractor management, a US PEO and an API that HR and payroll platforms can build on. The company was founded in 2019 by Job van der Voort, formerly VP of Product at GitLab, and Marcelo Lebre, formerly VP of Engineering at Unbabel. It operates as a fully distributed company and lists San Francisco as its headquarters. Its core argument has been that owning its legal entities, rather than relying on partner providers, makes onboarding faster and more reliable.

Remote announced an $11 million seed round on April 22, 2020, led by Two Sigma Ventures with Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Liquid2, INKEF and Remote First Capital, plus angels from GitLab and HackerOne. On November 10, 2020 it raised a $35 million Series A led by Index Ventures, joined by Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst and Two Sigma Ventures, with angels including Dylan Field and Aaron Levie. Eight months later, on July 13, 2021, Accel led a $150 million Series B with Sequoia, Index, Two Sigma, General Catalyst and Day One Ventures, valuing the company at more than $1 billion. On April 5, 2022 Remote announced a $300 million Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with Accel, Sequoia, Index Ventures, Two Sigma Ventures, General Catalyst, 9Yards, Adams Street and Base Growth, at a valuation of nearly $3 billion and $495 million raised in total. A Form D filed in May 2022 reports $310.05 million of equity sold in that offering.

Remote remains private and has not announced a priced round since the Series C. At that raise it reported 13x annual recurring revenue growth and a 900% increase in headcount year over year. In January 2026 it acquired Atlas, an expense management platform for distributed teams, on undisclosed terms; it has also acquired the equity management startup Easop. In May 2026 the company said its annual recurring revenue had passed $300 million, that it had become cash flow positive, that its payroll business was growing more than 300% a year, and that it owns more than 100 legal entities and serves tens of thousands of companies.

Remote shows how fast capital moved into remote work infrastructure after 2020. Its seed and Series A investors, Two Sigma Ventures and Index Ventures, entered within roughly a year of founding, and the company moved from seed to a $1 billion valuation in about 15 months and to a nearly $3 billion valuation in two years. Growth investors who came in at the 2022 peak, led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, have not yet seen a liquidity event, and the company's later disclosures emphasize revenue scale and cash flow rather than new capital, which is the path a 2021 or 2022 vintage unicorn needs to grow into its last private price.
