About Amex Ventures
Amex Ventures is the strategic investment unit of American Express. It was established in 2011, and its founding head, Harshul Sanghi, retired at the end of 2021, when Matt Sueoka took over as global head. The team has operated inside the company's Digital Labs organization, and its investments are meant to ladder directly to the parent's business needs, either by augmenting existing capabilities or by delivering new benefits to American Express customers.
The unit invests from seed through roughly Series B, with press accounts also citing rounds as late as Series C. Its published focus areas are consumer (dining, travel, entertainment and payments that strengthen the Card Member value proposition), business fintech (B2B payments and tools that automate manual workflows), commerce (discovery, conversion, post-purchase engagement and loyalty), enterprise technology and software (security, identity, data, AI and productivity), and frontier technologies such as blockchain applications and spatial computing. Portfolio companies have included Airwallex, Spotnana, Finix, Moderne, Melio, BioCatch, FalconX, TRM Labs and Stripe. In 2026 the team described a push into infrastructure for agentic commerce, with recent bets including Palm, Bluefish and Candex.
The distinctive feature is commercial integration. Amex Ventures says that about two-thirds of its investments have had partnerships with American Express business units, and a 2022 interview reported that 70% of companies held in the portfolio for 36 months or more maintained commercial relationships with the company. A dedicated business development function, led by a managing director, works to turn investments into customer, distribution or co-development arrangements, typically starting with a focused pilot and expanding from there. The team has said it does not manage the portfolio toward a particular exit route.
Investment Thesis
“Amex Ventures backs startups that can either augment existing American Express capabilities or deliver new benefits to its customers. In its own framing, it looks for consumer companies that enhance Card Member value, B2B fintech founders building "intuitive, thoughtful solutions that increase efficiency and automate traditionally manual workflows," commerce companies working on discovery, conversion and loyalty, and enterprise startups that "accelerate innovation across large enterprises," including cybersecurity, fraud detection and AI automation. Managing director Margaret Lim has described investments as "a two-way street": the unit brings capital and a customer base it wants to serve in new ways. Its 2026 focus includes financial and technical infrastructure for autonomous, agent-driven commerce, with an emphasis on security and compliance.”

Deal pace is described through cumulative counts: more than 70 startups backed in its first decade, more than 90 investments by 2022 according to Calcalist, and more than 100 early-stage startups since 2011 according to later company material.
