About Thomson Reuters Ventures

Thomson Reuters Ventures is the corporate venture capital fund of Thomson Reuters, the information and software company behind products for legal, tax, accounting, compliance and news professionals. Thomson Reuters announced the unit in October 2021 as a $100 million fund aimed at what it called the future of professionals, with Pat Wilburn, then Chief Strategy Officer, as executive director. In February 2025 the company committed a further $150 million to a second fund, bringing committed capital across the two vehicles to $250 million. The parent describes the unit as a core part of its Build, Partner, Buy strategy, and its 2025 annual report filed with the SEC lists the venture fund alongside acquisitions as a lever for adding AI capability.

The first fund targeted primarily Series A and Series B rounds in legal, tax and accounting, risk, fraud and compliance, and news and media. Fund 2 keeps a Series A core with flexibility to go earlier or later, and adds fintech as a named focus area. BetaKit reported that Fund 2 expects to make 20 to 25 investments over three years with checks of $4 million to $7 million, plus reserves for pro rata follow-ons. Fund 1 made 23 investments; Global Venturing named HerculesAI, Detected, Noetica and Wisedocs among them, and the parent's 2025 release cited Truewind as a portfolio company.

The distinctive feature is the pathway from minority stake to product integration. Thomson Reuters Ventures invested in Materia, an agentic AI company for tax, audit and accounting work, at the seed stage, and Thomson Reuters later acquired the company in October 2024. Truewind's chief executive has credited the fund with helping build a relationship with the Thomson Reuters tax and accounting software team. Accounting Today reported the parent's own framing that financial return is not the main motivation compared with fostering innovation for professionals.

Investment Thesis

“Thomson Reuters Ventures invests in early-stage technology companies building solutions to the most pressing challenges professionals face, with particular attention to generative and agentic AI. Its stated markets are legal technology, tax and accounting, fintech, risk, fraud and compliance, and news and media. In the 2021 launch release the parent framed the opportunity as AI and machine learning that helps professionals predict outcomes, act on trusted information and automate processes. The 2025 annual report says the unit prioritizes companies building practical solutions aligned with Thomson Reuters customers' needs, aimed at reducing friction in core workflows and delivering faster, complementary trusted outcomes. The fund aims to accelerate portfolio companies by giving founders access to Thomson Reuters assets, data and expertise.”

Fund History

Thomson Reuters Ventures is funded entirely from the Thomson Reuters balance sheet rather than outside limited partners. Fund 1 launched in October 2021 with $100 million and made 23 investments. Fund 2, announced in Toronto on February 10, 2025, carries a $150 million commitment (about C$215 million) and had not deployed capital at launch, with a couple of deals expected to close in the first quarter of 2025. The parent's annual report for 2025, filed on Form 40-F in March 2026, confirms the $150 million commitment and describes continued investing and founder programming during 2025. No Form D filings under the unit's name were found.
