ByteDance builds consumer internet applications driven by recommendation algorithms. Its products include the short-video apps TikTok and Douyin, the news aggregator Toutiao, the editing app CapCut and Lemon8, and its Seed team develops generative AI models including the Doubao chatbot. Zhang Yiming and Liang Rubo founded the company in Beijing in March 2012 after working together at the property search site 99fang.com. Its first app, Neihan Duanzi, launched in March 2012 and Toutiao followed that August. The group's holding entity is incorporated in the Cayman Islands.

Toutiao's first two funding rounds in 2012 and 2013 came from Susquehanna International Group's Asia investment arm and Yuri Milner. In 2014 Sequoia Capital led a $100 million Series C at a $500 million valuation, followed by Sina Weibo. A Series D at the end of 2016 brought in $1 billion from investors including Sequoia Capital and CCB International and valued the company above $11 billion. By September 2017 Toutiao alone was reported to be valued at $20 billion. Later backers include Primavera Capital Group, KKR, SoftBank Group, General Atlantic and Hillhouse Capital Group. Wikipedia describes ownership as roughly 60% outside investors, 20% founders and Chinese investors, and 20% employees.

ByteDance has never listed. Its valuation has instead been marked through employee share buybacks: $300 billion in September 2022, $223 billion in October 2023, and $300 billion again in a late 2024 offer reported by The Wall Street Journal. ByteDance bought musical.ly for up to $1 billion in November 2017 and merged it into TikTok in August 2018, the step that took TikTok global. A 2024 US law required ByteDance to divest TikTok or face a ban, and in 2021 a state-owned fund took a 1% golden share in its main Chinese subsidiary.

For investors, ByteDance shows the scale a private company can reach without an IPO. Susquehanna entered at the seed stage in 2012 and Sequoia at a $500 million valuation in 2014; the 2024 buyback price implies a value roughly 600 times that Series C mark, yet liquidity for outside holders has come mainly through company buybacks and secondary sales rather than a public market. Regulatory exposure in the US and China has become a direct input to how the stake is valued.
