About ZocDoc
ZocDoc (styled Zocdoc) runs an online marketplace where patients search for doctors and dentists by specialty, symptom, location and insurance, see open appointment slots, read verified reviews and book in-person or video visits. The service is free for patients; providers pay to list their availability, historically by subscription and, since 2019 in some markets, per new patient booked. Oliver Kharraz, Nick Ganju and Cyrus Massoumi founded the company in New York in 2007 and launched it at the TechCrunch40 conference that September. Massoumi was the first CEO; Kharraz, previously chief operating officer, replaced him in November 2015 and still leads the company.
Khosla Ventures led a $3 million Series A in 2008, which Jeff Bezos and Marc Benioff joined that October. In July 2010 Founders Fund led a $15 million Series B with Khosla Ventures, bringing total funding to nearly $20 million. In August 2011 DST invested $50 million, a round TechCrunch reported valued the company at $700 million or more. By 2014 ZocDoc had raised $97.9 million. In August 2015 it announced a $130 million round at a $1.8 billion valuation, then the third highest for a New York startup; Wikipedia lists Goldman Sachs, Ron Conway's SV Angel and Founders Fund among investors in that period. In early 2021 the private equity firm Francisco Partners invested $150 million. Disclosed rounds sum to roughly $378 million, though the company has not published a total.
ZocDoc remains private and has not announced an IPO or sale. After moving to per-booking pricing in 2019, it said providers on its platform rose 50% in the states that switched and that revenue grew 35% that year. It added telehealth in May 2020 and said in 2021 that 10,000 providers offered virtual visits and that the company was profitable. In May 2025 it launched an AI voice assistant that answers scheduling calls. A lawsuit by Massoumi against Kharraz, Ganju and a former executive over his removal was dismissed with prejudice in July 2024.
ZocDoc is a long-hold case. Khosla Ventures and Founders Fund entered in 2008 and 2010, DST and others priced it as a unicorn by 2015, and growth capital in 2021 came from a private equity firm rather than a venture fund. Nineteen years after founding there has been no public exit, so returns for the early backers remain on paper unless secondary sales occurred.
