Aera VC was founded in 2017 by New Zealanders Derek Handley and Nick Winstone and has raised two flagship funds: Aera I in 2017 and Aera II in 2022. Fund II raised roughly $44 million at announcement, and the firm has been reported at approximately $30 million of capital in its earlier vehicle, figures that place it deliberately at the small end of climate venture rather than in the growth tier. Both funds have delivered top-decile returns by the firm's account, with three portfolio companies reaching unicorn valuations from a seed-stage entry. Portfolio companies have collectively raised more than $1.4 billion in follow-on capital since 2017. The firm is actively deploying Fund II and expects to launch Fund III in 2026, and has partnered with Fidante to reach European limited partners.
