About BHP Ventures

BHP Ventures is the in-house venture capital arm of BHP, the Australian-listed mining group. BHP created it in 2020 as a dedicated fund to find and invest in game-changing technologies through emerging companies, with an early emphasis on its emissions goals. By November 2024, BHP said the unit had invested in more than 20 emerging growth companies, with around two-thirds of its investment spend supporting BHP's climate change goals and targets. By September 2025 it backed more than 30 portfolio companies. BHP's annual report subsidiary list includes BHP Ventures US Inc, and the unit is split into a US-based investment team and a portfolio development team in Australia, Singapore and the US.

The portfolio falls into four themes. Resource discovery includes KoBold Metals, GeologicAI, Terra AI and Atomionics. Mineral extraction and recovery includes Jetti, Ceibo, SiTration, pH7 Technologies, Cuprum, DISA and Summit Lithium Technologies. Decarbonization covers Boston Metal, Electra, Amogy, Verdagy, Eavor, Antora, ZwitterCo and Allonnia. Automation and AI includes FieldAI, Mariana Minerals, AIM and Plotlogic. In August 2026, BHP Ventures was named among the strategic investors in a US$105 million private placement backing DISA Uranium.

What sets the unit apart is direct access to BHP's mines. Boston Metal has tested low-carbon steelmaking technology with ore from BHP's Western Australia Iron Ore and Queensland metallurgical coal assets. BHP is also testing Jetti and Ceibo leaching technologies as part of its copper leaching studies, which complement its in-house sulphide leaching work. BHP keeps the unit separate from its Think & Act Differently partnership program and from BHP Xplor, its accelerator for junior explorers.

Investment Thesis

“BHP Ventures invests in technologies that could make mining safer, more productive and more sustainable, and in the systems the energy transition needs, aiming to benefit BHP's business, its value chain and the wider industry. Its stated priorities include decarbonization (geothermal energy and future fuels among them), novel extraction, AI-driven exploration and robotics. It describes itself as best suited to high-growth startups with scalable business models that need substantial capital. Beyond funding, it offers access to BHP technical experts and assets, plus testing and collaboration, so that technology can move from pilot into BHP's operations.”

Fund History

BHP Ventures invests BHP balance-sheet capital through a dedicated corporate fund created in 2020. BHP has not disclosed a fund size. Its own updates track deal pace: more than 20 emerging growth companies by November 2024, about two-thirds of investment spend tied to climate goals, and more than 30 portfolio companies by September 2025. BHP's 20-F subsidiary list names BHP Ventures US Inc, consistent with a US-based investment team. Its climate transition reports credit BHP Ventures investments in Boston Metal and Electra as part of BHP's steelmaking decarbonization work. In August 2026 it joined a US$105 million private placement for DISA Uranium, confirming it is still active.
