About Equinor Ventures
Equinor Ventures is the corporate venture capital arm of Equinor, the Norwegian energy company headquartered in Stavanger. It began in February 2016 as Statoil Energy Ventures, a fund set up inside Statoil's New Energy Solutions business area with a plan to invest up to $200 million over four to seven years, run at launch by a six-person team across London and Oslo. When Statoil renamed itself Equinor in May 2018, the venture unit took the Equinor name. Equinor describes the unit as dedicated to investing in ambitious early-phase and growth companies, and Global Venturing reported in 2025 that the team had grown to 25 people spread across the US and Europe, including investment managers in Boston.
The unit invests in renewables, low-carbon solutions and future business opportunities for its parent, with portfolio companies primarily in Europe and North America. Its published portfolio is grouped into carbon management, critical resources, emerging fuels, future operations, oil and gas, and power and flexibility. Holdings range from seed rounds, such as the Space Intelligence round it led in 2023 and a EUR 6 million seed round in Attributes in 2025, to larger growth rounds such as Arcadia's $200 million financing in 2022. It also holds positions in other venture funds, including AP Ventures, Energize Capital, Volta Energy Technologies and Counteract Partners.
What distinguishes the unit is access to Equinor's industrial base. Equinor says it offers portfolio companies long-term partnership including follow-on funding, business development and strategic collaboration, and access to research facilities, pilots and technical expertise. The portfolio mixes near-term operational tools for Equinor's own assets, such as drone and sensor companies, with long-dated bets on the energy transition, including fusion developer Commonwealth Fusion Systems, electrolyser maker Electric Hydrogen and perovskite solar company Oxford PV. Recent disclosed deals include EUR 3 million in Spanish solar-to-hydrogen company Hysun in October 2025 and a $1.5 million follow-on in Powertrust.
Investment Thesis
“Equinor Ventures states that innovation from startups can drive progress toward a low-carbon future, and it invests in renewables, low-carbon solutions and future business opportunities for Equinor. It takes minority equity positions with ticket sizes matched to the company's phase, and commits to long-term partnership with follow-on capital. Its thesis is organised around six areas: carbon management, critical resources, emerging fuels, future operations, oil and gas, and power and flexibility. In power, Global Venturing reported a focus on electron-related technologies, from generation to transmission, distribution and storage of electricity, including grid enhancement. The unit pairs capital with Equinor's pilots, test sites and technical staff.”

Fund History
Statoil Energy Ventures launched in February 2016 with up to $200 million to invest over four to seven years in renewable energy and low-carbon technology, including wind, solar, storage, transport, energy efficiency, smart grids and fund investments. It complemented the older Statoil Technology Invest unit. The vehicle is a balance-sheet arm of Equinor rather than an outside-LP fund, and no later fund size has been disclosed. Deal pace remains steady: Equinor's news page lists investments in Hysun, Attributes, Powertrust and ElectronX in 2025, following 44.01 in 2024 and nine announcements in 2023, among them HySiLabs, Captura, Infravision and a minority stake in carbon removal fund manager Counteract.
