About Mozilla Ventures
Mozilla Ventures is the venture fund of Mozilla, the nonprofit-led organisation behind the Firefox browser. Mozilla announced the fund on 2 November 2022 with an initial $35 million and launched it officially in early 2023. Mozilla describes it as an impact venture fund that invests in startups pushing the internet and the tech industry in a better direction, and says the fund will grow through partnerships with other investors. Managing partner Mohamed Nanabhay has led it since inception.
The fund backs founders whose products advance the values in the Mozilla Manifesto: privacy, inclusion, transparency, accessibility and human dignity. It invests globally in both B2B and B2C companies, mainly at pre-seed and seed, with launch coverage describing a seed to Series A range and the fund noting occasional later or off-thesis investments when mission fit is strong. Its three themes are trustworthy AI, healthy communities, and security and privacy. The first three investments, announced at launch, were Secure AI Labs (healthcare data security), Block Party (social media safety) and heylogin (password management for small businesses).
The portfolio has since grown to about 40 companies listed on the fund's site, and Global Venturing counted 42 in 2025. It is weighted toward open and accountable AI: Hugging Face, Nous Research, Answer.AI, Flower, Oumi, Credo AI, Holistic AI and Fiddler, alongside content provenance company Truepic, email security firm Sendmarc and African language AI company Lelapa.AI. What sets the fund apart from typical corporate arms is that its strategic return is mission alignment rather than product integration. Mozilla's executive director Mark Surman described it at launch as fuelling companies that put people before profits. The fund remained active in 2026, with portfolio news such as an $11 million round for Era in April 2026.
Investment Thesis
“Mozilla Ventures targets early-stage startups whose products are designed to delight users or empower developers, with Mozilla Manifesto values of privacy, inclusion, transparency, accessibility and human dignity built in from day one. It looks for founders with a compelling product vision and alignment with Mozilla's values, and evaluates teams, products and business models as a conventional investor would. The fund names three themes: trustworthy AI, healthy communities, and security and privacy. Its stated long-term aim is to make the internet a healthier place by funding products that respect users and decentralise digital power.”

No second fund or Form D filing under the fund's name was found.
