Niantic

Niantic is a San Francisco developer of location-based augmented reality games, best known for Ingress and Pokémon GO. John Hanke, who came to Google through its acquisition of Keyhole and later ran the Geo division behind Google Maps and Google Earth, formed Niantic Labs inside Google in October 2010. Ingress launched in 2012, and Pokémon GO, built with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, followed in July 2016. After Scopely acquired the games business, that team was renamed Scopely Explore a year later.

Niantic spun out of Google in October 2015, when Google, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company agreed to invest up to $30 million in a Series A, $20 million upfront and $10 million tied to milestones. In February 2016 it added $5 million from Alsop Louie Partners, You & Mr. Jones Brandtech Ventures and angels including Cyan and Scott Banister. In November 2017 Spark Capital led a $200 million Series B with Founders Fund, Meritech, Javelin, You & Mr. Jones and NetEase; a Form D filed that month reports $198.8 million sold. In January 2019 Institutional Venture Partners led a $245 million Series C with Samsung Ventures and AXiomatic Gaming at a $3.7 billion pre-money valuation. In late 2021 Coatue Management invested $300 million, valuing the company at $9 billion, and a December 2021 Form D reports $300 million sold.

On March 12, 2025 Scopely, a subsidiary of Savvy Games Group, agreed to buy Niantic's games business for $3.5 billion, and the deal closed on May 29, 2025. Scopely took Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, Campfire, Wayfarer and a team of about 400 people. Scopely said the games business generated more than $1 billion of revenue in 2024 and that Pokémon GO reached more than 100 million unique players that year. The geospatial business, with Ingress Prime and Peridot, was spun out as Niantic Spatial Inc., led by Hanke.

Niantic shows a corporate spinout financed first by strategic partners and then by venture firms after its breakout product. Spark Capital and Founders Fund entered in 2017, after Pokémon GO had already launched, and Coatue's 2021 round priced the company at $9 billion. The $3.5 billion sale of the games business came below that 2021 mark, although holders kept their interest in the separately spun out Niantic Spatial. That makes the headline price a partial measure of what late investors received, and the gap between the two figures shows how a peak-era round can sit above a later strategic exit.
