How to Use This Tool

Select your target role, fund size, and city. The calculator adjusts for cost-of-living differences and years of experience. Remember that carry (the real upside in VC) typically only kicks in at the senior associate level and above.

Total Compensation

Total Comp = Base Salary + Annual Bonus + Carry (long-term)

VC compensation has three layers. Base salary is your guaranteed pay. Bonus is typically 10–30% of base, paid annually. Carry (carried interest) is your share of fund profits — it can dwarf cash comp but only pays out when portfolio companies exit, usually 7–10 years after the fund invests.

Why This Matters

Understanding VC compensation helps you negotiate effectively and set realistic expectations. Base salary in VC is often lower than comparable roles in banking or tech, but carry can be worth millions if the fund performs well. Knowing the typical ranges by role and fund size gives you leverage in conversations.
