Backstage Capital

Backstage Capital is a Los Angeles, California venture capital firm founded in 2015 by Arlan Hamilton. It invests from pre-seed through Series B and later rounds, with directory sector coverage spanning Aerospace & Defense, Consumer, Fintech, Climate and other categories. Its mandate is defined by who it backs rather than what sector it backs: companies led by people underrepresented in technology, including women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs.

Hamilton built the firm from outside the industry. She had worked as a tour manager in music and started an independent magazine before raising a first fund, and Backstage's early positioning leaned on the argument that the underrepresentation gap was a pricing inefficiency rather than a charitable cause. Portfolio companies include Blendoor, the diversity analytics platform, Timely Care in student mental health, Fearless Fund, and Partpic, the visual search company acquired by Amazon.

The firm assembled an unusually wide platform for its size: a flagship fund, an accelerator with its own dedicated vehicle, an opportunity fund, a Utah-registered flex fund, and a retail investor community that opened access to non-institutional backers. SEC filings show the accelerator vehicle raising just over $2 million against a $2.5 million target, which is the scale most of the individual entities operated at.
