About Takeda Ventures

Takeda Ventures, Inc. is the corporate venture capital arm of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, the Tokyo-headquartered drugmaker. Takeda's May 2026 notice of its annual shareholders meeting lists Takeda Ventures, Inc. as a wholly owned investment company with its head office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. SEC filings by Takeda describe it as owned directly by Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc., with Takeda holding ultimate voting and investment power over its shares. Global Venturing records that the unit was previously called Takeda Research Investment and was rebranded Takeda Ventures in October 2010.

The unit invests in private therapeutics companies, usually through preferred stock in venture rounds, and keeps positions after those companies list. Public filings show it as a shareholder of Xilio Therapeutics (about 1.48 million shares in July 2024), Equillium (about 1.84 million shares in January 2024) and Lyell Immunopharma, where it was named a selling stockholder in a 2025 prospectus. In February 2026, Takeda Ventures converted 7,085,290 shares of Series A-1 preferred stock in Obsidian Therapeutics into common stock, which shows the unit still active in 2026. Other filings name it as an investor in Avidity Biosciences' early $30 million venture financing, and a November 2024 Form D for EvolveImmune Therapeutics lists a director with an address care of Takeda Ventures.

What distinguishes the unit is how tightly it ties to Takeda's research organisation. Miles Gerson, identified as head of Takeda Ventures in an October 2024 Galecto release, also serves as Takeda's representative to Bridge Medicines, a drug discovery company formed with academic partners. Former partner Kathryn Penkus Corzo combined her investing role with heading oncology cell therapy development at Takeda, building a portfolio of CAR-T, CAR-NK and iPSC programs. Takeda Ventures also co-founded the Israeli biotech accelerator FutuRx with OrbiMed Israel Partners, Johnson and Johnson Innovation and Bayer's LEAPS.

Investment Thesis

“Takeda Ventures has not published a current thesis on a live website; its former domain no longer serves a page. Public filings and releases show a strategy of investing in therapeutics companies whose science sits close to Takeda's research priorities, with an emphasis on oncology, cell therapy, immunology and genetic medicine. Its executives are often operating scientists inside Takeda, so investments double as a window on external science and a route to partnerships. Typical exposures are venture preferred stock in private biotech companies, positions retained through IPO, and seats on boards of companies such as EvolveImmune Therapeutics.”

Fund History

Takeda Ventures invests from Takeda's balance sheet through Takeda Ventures, Inc., a US subsidiary, rather than through a fund with outside limited partners. No current fund size has been published; Global Venturing headlined a $100 million commitment to early-stage bioventures in a 2011 interview. Holdings show up in SEC filings, including Takeda's Schedule 13G reports on Xilio and Equillium and Form D filings by portfolio companies. Activity continued into 2026, when Takeda Ventures converted its Series A-1 preferred stock in Obsidian Therapeutics into common stock and Takeda's annual meeting notice still listed the subsidiary as an investment company.
