About Yamaha Motor Ventures
Yamaha Motor Ventures (YMV) is the Silicon Valley venture unit of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., the Japanese maker of motorcycles, marine engines and robotics. It was established in 2015 as Yamaha Motor Ventures & Laboratory Silicon Valley and operates from 422 Portage Avenue in Palo Alto. The unit describes itself as a separate entity from Yamaha Motor Co., which it says lets it run a streamlined process and execute deals quickly. Its stated purpose is to back startups working on the problems in Yamaha Motor's long term vision: feeding the world sustainably, enhancing human possibilities, enabling longer and healthier lives, and moving people and goods around the world.
YMV calls its deals exploratory investments. Its website lists nine focus areas (transportation, robotics, supply chain, fintech and insurtech, AI and machine learning, energy, industrial decarbonization and materials, agriculture, and digital health and wellness), 33 portfolio companies, $300 million in total AUM and an average check of $1 million to $3 million. Portfolio companies shown on the site include Path Robotics, Rios, Shippeo, Ridepanda, Velofix, Range Energy, Phoenix Tailings, Foundation Alloy, Sortera Technologies, Exyn and Momnt.
What sets the unit apart is the operating support behind the check. YMV says its team comes from the industries it invests in, as former operators and customers, and it offers portfolio companies Yamaha Motor's supplier and distribution relationships, operations in more than 32 countries, and design-for-manufacturing help from a company that has built products since the 1950s. It also employs its own engineers: a senior mechanical engineer with a Yamaha scooter and motorcycle design background and a principal robotics engineer provide engineering support to portfolio companies. In a 2022 interview, managing director Anish Patel said the parent attaches no contractual lock-ins and gives the team autonomy to invest outside mobility.
Investment Thesis
“YMV states its mission as to "catalyze innovation by supporting entrepreneurs with Yamaha Motor's unique capabilities to transform how we live." The thesis starts from the parent's long term vision of solving major social problems, and the unit makes exploratory investments in startups addressing them. The first fund in 2018 targeted future personal mobility, urban transportation, aviation, automated agriculture and automated health care. With the second Exploratory Fund in 2023, Patel said the team would keep its original focus on mobility, healthtech and agtech while adding fintech and insurtech, and the fund also named robotics, data and AI, and digital health and wellness. The current site adds energy, supply chain and industrial decarbonization and materials.”

Global Venturing reported a $100 million Yamaha Motor Sustainability Fund in June 2022 and the $100 million Yamaha Motor Exploratory Fund, L.P.
