About AbbVie Ventures
AbbVie Ventures is the corporate strategic venture capital arm of AbbVie, the North Chicago based biopharmaceutical company. AbbVie describes the unit as investing since 2009 in transformational scientific opportunities aligned with its core R&D interests, with the stated aim of gaining access to next-generation science and building relationships with proven and emerging scientific leaders. The unit sits alongside AbbVie's Discovery Research and Search and Evaluation groups and connects them to science happening outside the company.
The unit focuses exclusively on novel therapeutics at the discovery and preclinical stages. Its current focus areas, per AbbVie's site, are oncology, immunology, neuroscience, obesity and aesthetics, and its portfolio page also lists eye care, an area AbbVie entered through the Allergan acquisition. AbbVie says the active portfolio comprises more than 30 companies in the US and Europe and that it targets six to eight new investments a year, predominantly at Seed or Series A, with the ability to create companies and to lead or co-lead syndicates. A 2024 AbbVie partner feature in Nature Biopharma Dealmakers described the unit as investing from company creation through Series B. The investing team is spread across Cambridge (MA), San Francisco, Oxford, Ludwigshafen and Shanghai.
The distinctive offer is access to AbbVie's internal expertise across drug discovery, development, regulatory, manufacturing and commercialization, which the unit says it extends to portfolio companies from diligence onward. It also uses senior venture partners and scientists in residence drawn from AbbVie R&D. In the same 2024 feature, AbbVie reported that 10 portfolio companies went public between 2020 and 2024 and 11 were acquired. Former investments listed on its portfolio page include companies acquired by Gilead, Merck, Lilly, Amgen, Sanofi, Novartis and Otsuka. Active holdings include DISCO Pharmaceuticals, Xilio Therapeutics and Umoja Biopharma.
Investment Thesis
“AbbVie Ventures states that tomorrow's innovations are developed by today's entrepreneurs, and it invests in transformational science aligned with AbbVie's core R&D interests to gain access to that science and to the people behind it. Its head has framed the goal as strategic access to transformative science, to people and to ecosystems. In practice the unit backs discovery and preclinical therapeutics companies in oncology, immunology, neuroscience, obesity, eye care and aesthetics, with interest in modalities including small molecules, antibodies, protein and RNA degraders, molecular glues, antibody drug conjugates, T cell engagers and genetic medicines such as mRNA and AAV gene therapy.”

Fund History
AbbVie Ventures invests from AbbVie's balance sheet rather than from a closed fund with outside limited partners, and AbbVie has not published a dedicated fund size. According to a 2024 AbbVie partner feature in Nature Biopharma Dealmakers, the unit receives an annual reload of funds, which gives it a stable capital base for new investments and follow-ons. AbbVie reported that its portfolio companies raised more than $1.5 billion from 2020 to 2023. The unit's own site states a pace of six to eight new investments a year (the 2024 feature said four to eight) and an active portfolio of more than 30 companies.
