About LG Technology Ventures
LG Technology Ventures was established in 2018 as the venture capital investment arm of LG Group and operates from an office on Great America Way in Santa Clara, California. Its capital comes from LG operating companies: Global Corporate Venturing reported in 2023 that seven affiliates, LG Electronics, LG Display, LG Innotek, LG Chem, LG Energy Solution, LG CNS and LG Uplus, serve as limited partners, and that chief executive Dong-Su Kim reports to LG chairman Koo Kwang-mo. The firm's own site describes nearly $1 billion under management, more than 80 active investments and 10 exits or IPOs.
The firm says it backs early-stage innovators and gives them access to LG Group's global resources and network. Its portfolio page groups holdings into AI, mobility, advanced materials and batteries, life sciences and biotech, display and devices, enterprise software, space, cleantech, and consumer and entertainment. The AI group is the largest and includes Anthropic, Figure AI, ElevenLabs, Moloco, Cresta, Poolside, Skild AI and Tenstorrent. The battery and materials group, which maps to LG Chem and LG Energy Solution, includes SES.ai, Element Energy, Forge Nano, Sion Power and Natrion. Life sciences holdings include Arcellx, Aardvark Therapeutics and KSQ Therapeutics.
The structure is unusual for a corporate unit. Global Corporate Venturing reported a carry-like profit distribution for the team and an investment committee of Kim and three managing directors, and the team page lists business development managers alongside investors, reflecting the job of connecting portfolio companies to LG affiliates. Disclosed outcomes include the IPOs of Arcellx, Amwell, Aardvark Therapeutics and MakinaRocks, and the sale of DataFleets to LiveRamp. In a 2023 interview Kim framed the energy transition as a central theme, calling it a once in a century change in how energy is used, with LG in the middle of it.
Investment Thesis
“LG Technology Ventures states that it backs early-stage innovators with access to LG Group's resources and network. Its listed sectors are AI, biotech, cleantech (energy and batteries), enterprise, consumer, and devices and materials, which line up with the businesses of its limited partner affiliates in electronics, displays, components, chemicals, batteries, IT services and telecom. Dong-Su Kim's published bio describes the mandate as early-stage information technology, automotive, manufacturing, life sciences, energy and advanced materials. In 2023 Kim told Global Corporate Venturing that the energy transition, spanning batteries, appliances, HVAC and grid infrastructure, is a defining theme because LG sits in the middle of it.”
