About Shell Ventures

Shell Ventures is the corporate venture capital arm of Shell plc. Established in 1996, it describes itself as one of the first corporate venture funds in the oil and gas industry. It invests in technologies and capital-light business models tied to the future of energy, and its team sits in seven countries: the United States (San Francisco, Houston, Boston), the United Kingdom (London), the Netherlands (Amsterdam, The Hague), India (Bangalore) and China (Beijing). Shell Ventures works closely with Shell's core businesses and strategy teams, which help shape its focus areas, investment decisions and portfolio support.

The unit is an active minority investor in early- and growth-stage start-ups and usually invests in syndicates with venture firms and other corporate investors. Its stated focus areas are low carbon solutions, emissions management, electrification, operational excellence, mobility and digital. The published portfolio covers hydrogen electrolysis (Verdagy, Supercritical), fusion (Zap Energy), carbon capture (Mantel, Vycarb), methane monitoring (Mirico), thermal storage (Kraftblock), ammonia production (Ammobia), industrial AI (AiDash, Akselos, Detect Technologies) and logistics robotics (Cartken, Neolix).

Its main advantage over a financial investor is access to Shell itself. A business development team looks for ways to deploy and test portfolio technology across Shell's assets and operations, and start-ups gain access to Shell's technical and scientific experts and its R&D facilities. The unit has also produced public-market and M&A outcomes. In September 2024 Shell plc reported an 8.4 percent stake in Nasdaq-listed EV charging company XCHG, held through its subsidiary Shell Ventures Company Limited, and Global Venturing credits Managing Director Quennie Co with an M&A exit from Travis Road Services.

Investment Thesis

“Shell Ventures invests in solutions that help lower emissions, electrify energy systems and generate data-driven insights, plus technologies that improve efficiency and safety, all supporting Shell's core businesses and its customers. In low carbon it targets business models that cut emissions from existing assets, enable lower-carbon fuels and processes, and scale decarbonization in hard-to-abate sectors. In electrification it focuses on commercial and industrial customers, with an emphasis on flexibility, demand response, novel storage and distributed energy. In mobility and digital it backs new ways to move people and goods and new approaches to energy data, and it gives preference to scalable models with long-term growth potential.”

Fund History

Shell Ventures invests Shell balance-sheet capital and does not publish a fund size, so no AUM figure is given here. The SEC record shows how holdings are structured: a September 2024 Schedule 13G filed by Shell plc reported 198,442,800 XCHG Class A ordinary shares (8.4 percent of the class), held through Shell Ventures Company Limited in Shanghai. The unit's mix of hydrogen, carbon capture and EV charging positions in Europe, North America and China shows deal flow across all three regions. Global Venturing describes it as one of the energy sector's longest-standing corporate investors.
