EQT Ventures was built by Hjalmar Winbladh, the Swedish entrepreneur behind Rebtel and Wrapp, alongside Kees Koolen and Lars Jornow. Winbladh remains a founding partner. Jornow, also a founding partner, announced his departure in July 2025 as part of a wider reshuffle tied to a larger United States push.
Ali Mitchell is partner and head of EQT Ventures. Sandra Malmberg joined the partnership in 2023 and serves as partner and chief operating officer. Ted Persson is operating partner for brand and communications, a full-time design and brand seat that is unusual inside a European venture partnership and reflects the firm's emphasis on helping companies build consumer-grade identity early. The team is based in Stockholm with investors across the firm's European offices and a growing presence in San Francisco.
EQT Ventures launched in May 2016 with EQT Ventures I at 566 million euros of commitments, then the largest first-time European venture fund, led by Hjalmar Winbladh, Kees Koolen and Lars Jornow. EQT Ventures II followed at 660 million euros in 2019.
EQT Ventures III held a final close in November 2022 at 1.1 billion euros of total commitments, 1 billion euros of it fee-generating, making it the largest European fund dedicated to early-stage technology investing across Europe and North America. The funds sit inside EQT AB, the listed Swedish private markets group, which gives the venture team access to a far larger institutional limited partner base than a standalone emerging manager could reach. A defining feature across all three vintages is Motherbrain, an in-house data platform the firm built to source and screen companies algorithmically rather than by inbound referral, and which EQT has since extended to other strategies across the group.
EQT Ventures primarily invests at the Pre-Seed, Seed, Series A, Series B+ stages. This means they focus on companies that are at the earliest idea or prototype phase.
