London is Europe's dominant venture market, and the gap between it and the next European city is wide enough that a founder raising in Europe usually raises in London whether or not the company is based there. The reasons are structural: access to global capital markets, a university pipeline that supplies technical founders at scale, and a generation of operators from companies like Wise, Revolut, Monzo and DeepMind who now recycle into angel and fund roles.

Balderton Capital is the leading independent European Series A and B partnership, and it has stayed genuinely European rather than acting as a feeder to a US parent. Index Ventures is the rare firm that competes for deals on both sides of the Atlantic from a London base, investing from seed through growth. Atomico, founded by a Skype co-founder, concentrates on Series B and later in deep tech, climate and enterprise software. Accel has run European and Israeli investing from London since 2000 and remains a Series A and B lead. Northzone, Dawn Capital and Highland Europe fill out the later-stage bench.

The seed layer underneath them is what makes the market work. Seedcamp, BACKED VC, Crane Venture Partners and Concept Ventures lead or co-lead pre-seed and seed rounds, and several of them are the first institutional money in companies the larger funds see a year later.
